What is a Refugia Sump?

A sump stores both equipment and the excess water needed to run that equipment. It constitutes the primary filtration center and emergency-safeguard system of an aquarium.

The Refugia Sump has a filter shell, containing a prefilter sponge, probe holder, and Bio Balls for aerobic filtration. Mineral mud in the second chamber enriches and filters aquarium water further. An additional sponge unit prevents larger particulates from the mineral mud to get back into the aquarium. Finally, a "dry" chamber allows water to collect before being reintroduced to the tank.
